This article expresses (25) lessons that I have learned and some that I am still in the process of mastering, saying yes to during this life journey to remain healthy. Say yes to healing your inner child, forgiveness, self-care, embracing your creativity, being authentic, emotional intelligence, learning, receiving help, teamwork, generosity, positivity, new beginnings, patience, celebrating your accomplishments, effective communication, creating boundaries, finding your sense of independence before entering a relationship, self-protection, choosing experience wisely, balance, leaving room for subjective points of view, standing in your power, cry, knowing when to relax, and resiliency.
Healing your inner child: It took me almost three years to connect with my inner child. I did not realize how much I neglected myself until I received support from an MFLC (Military and Family Life Counseling) counselor stationed at Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan. After being in counseling for a while, I wrote a letter to my inner child that I would like to share – "What happened to you was not your fault. It is ok to feel. You are worthy of everything good and everything you desire. I see you and understand you. I will forever protect you. I love you!" The inner child never dies, no matter how old we get. Healing your inner child allows you to address past wounds. The Military and Family Life Counseling program supports service members, families, and survivors with confidential non-medical counseling on installations. I highly suggest seeking assistance when needed for anyone with access to their services.
Forgiveness: Forgiveness is not about acting like whatever caused you pain did not occur. The reality is that the person who hurts you walks away with your power, energy, and power if you decide not to forgive. Sometimes, it takes time to wrap our heads around what happened and why, so it is necessary to prioritize your energy the way you see fit so it is well-spent on the right things like anger and resentment. Forgiveness allows us to move forward much faster with a better understanding that we can utilize toward our life purpose.
Self-care: Whether it is having a spa day, journaling, or spending an hour or two at the gym, creating time for self-care and nurturing your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual is essential for overall well-being and happiness. My favorite is bath time, where I use essential oil, Epsom salt, and bubble soap.
Embrace your creativity: Be true to yourself, think creatively, and find joy in creating something unique for the world.
Be authentic by following your heart: Following your passions leads to a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
Emotional Intelligence: Understanding and managing emotions and empathizing with others enhances stronger, longer-lasting relationships and promotes personal growth.
Learning: Keeping our minds open to knowledge helps personal development and shapes a better future. We are all influencers. Having a large platform is optional for bringing change. "The purpose of memory is to learn from past lessons to structure the future"—Jordan Peterson.
Receiving help: It is important to ask for help and accept the support of others. I am still mastering this because I hold on to my independence and trust others. Not getting assistance will result in burnout and unnecessary obstacles.
Teamwork: Teamwork makes the dream work, and success requires a village. Collaborating with others leads to better solutions and fosters belonging and unity.
Generosity: Share your light and resources to impact the world positively. We will not be able to share this human experience forever.
Positivity: Maintaining faith and an optimistic mindset helps overcome challenges and attract positivity into life. My faith has kept me strong throughout my nine years in the Marine Corps. I am proud to say I have gained so much insight regarding life that will stay with me forever. Lastly, do not forget to smile, even though growing pains!
New beginnings: Traveling and exploring new places allow us to gain experiences that broaden perspectives, promote personal growth, and create lasting memories.
Patience: Timing is everything. Flowers do not grow overnight. Patience allows us to be in control but also helps with our faith.
Celebrating your accomplishments: Sometimes, we must give ourselves more credit for the energy we put into our crafts and the rewards we receive. Celebrating our accomplishments helps us recognize hard work and dedication, provides motivation and positivity, and inspires others.
Effective communication is necessary to build solid relationships, resolve conflicts, meet our wants and needs, and understand others. Repeating yourself is a healthy form of communication. As a single parent of three children under 10, I have to tell myself this daily.
Creating boundaries: Establishing personal limitations allows for self-respect, healthy relationships, and preserving mental and emotional well-being. If the people in your circle, including family members, have trouble establishing boundaries, they are not for you.
Find your sense of independence before entering a relationship. This concept is helpful in intimate or work relationships. It brings equality to the relationship. Both partners can contribute to decision-making and support each other's goals and aspirations. This balance promotes a healthy, fulfilling relationship built on mutual respect.
Self-protection: Standing up for yourself is essential because it shows self-respect, leading to others treating you with respect. Understanding your needs, desires, and priorities makes protecting your individuality and personal space with others around you easy.
Choosing experiences wisely: Being intentional about our experiences helps us grow personally. Practice choosing what is best for you.
Balance: Maintaining balance in all aspects of life prevents burnout and promotes overall happiness. Too much of anything, even water, can kill you.
Leaving room for subjective points of view: Leaving room for personal points of view displays respect for others' opinions and beliefs, which fosters open-mindedness, tolerance, and growth.
Standing in your power assists you in recognizing and embracing your strengths and capabilities, which empowers you to achieve your goals. "It's your job to see your own light," says Michelle Obama.
Cry: Allowing yourself to express emotions, including sadness, promotes emotional well-being and helps heal ourselves.
Knowing when to slow down and rest: Relaxing is essential for overall well-being. It helps you find a better balance in life, nurture yourself, and enhance your ability to appreciate life. You cannot be in a state of competing and comparing yourself with others. Stay in your lane and know when to sit down.
Resilience: Resiliency is the ability to bounce back from adversity and overcome challenges. Thanks to the Marine Corps and being a single parent, I understand this concept all too well. Adapting to situations and having faith that I will make it out alive stronger than ever helps me overcome obstacles in life. Life is a marathon, not a sprint!
